What is the MJYSO? The MJYSO is a non-profit organization that began in June of 1984. We are the only program for children in Moose Jaw concentrated on orchestral training. The program provides orchestral experience, training and encouragement while promoting and developing skills and knowledge in string techniques. A board of parent volunteers governs the organization. |

Where and when are the weekly orchestra lessons? Beginner, Junior & Intermediate orchestra rehearsals take place at St. Michael School. Seniors rehearse at Zion Church. Orchestra members should arrive 10 minutes prior to starting time, to get set up and tuned up. |
What are the levels of training? Presently the orchestra consists of about 30 members between the ages of 5 and 17 years. There are 4 levels of instruction ranging from beginners who have never played an instrument to more advanced players. Students learn to play the violin, viola, cello or bass. Private lessons are included in the membership cost for the first 3 years of instruction and rental instruments are available through the organization at very reasonable rates. |
How are the lessons structured? Once a week between September and May, the members gather in their orchestral groups and practice for about one hour. The lessons are run by conductors where they develop structure and skill in playing in groups. Individual lessons with qualified instructors are for half an hour where they receive specific attention tailored to their own needs. |
Do I need to find a personal instructor for my child? We have a list of instructors that are paid directly from MJYSO. All you need to do is contact one of them to coordinate a time to meet that suits both of your schedules. |
What kind of concerts, workshops or other events are part of the year? In 2007 the MJYSO performed in a number of community events including “Bethlehem Live”, the “Rotary Carol Festival” and at a number of local schools as part of an annual school tour. The orchestra actively participates each year in the Moose Jaw Music Festival and holds recitals for family, friends and supporters of MJYSO at Christmas and in the spring. One of last year’s highlights for the students was a free trip to the Regina Symphony Orchestra at the Centre of the Arts. In May the MJYSO hosted the annual Fiddle Workshop. This two-day workshop for violin, cello and bass players attracted 29 players of all ages and skill levels. Featured clinicians included “Saskatchewan’s Grand Champion Fiddler”, Dean Bernier; Lucas Welsh, fiddler; Tabitha Grass, fiddler; Shane Grass, bass player & cellist and Robin Grass, fiddler. All of these additional activities help to create excitement and interest in the musical arts for our children. |
